Newburgh, New York: 1824. Paperback. A bank passbook for Silas K. Goodale (1798-1880) with the Bank of Newburgh, New York, the very first locally chartered bank in the city. All but two pages are blank. The accounting begins on February 14, 1824 and continues to November 29, 1825. The handwritten name "Silas K. Goodale" appears on a small piece of paper stuck to the cover. The village of Newburgh was incorporated in 1800. Located on the Hudson River it grew quickly and became a major center of commerce from 1850 on. With a well developed transportation network, Newburgh was an important steamboat river stop and attracted many businesses whose ships engaged in international trade. The Bank of Newburgh was chartered in 1811 and for twenty three years was the only banking institution in the area; it also had a branch in Ithaca New York which operated for 12 years. 4 x 6 1/4". Peach marbled paper wraps, with title at front cover on hand written paper label laid down. Very good condition. Item #17836
