Animal ABC and Picture Blocks. In original box.
Germany: Ca. 1890. Charming children's picture blocks with color animal pictures. The chromolithographic illustrations mounted on wooden blocks, depicting various animals, including a kangaroo. Each animal block has descriptive text on the verso. The text for the kangaroo reads, "The Kangaroo comes from Australia. By the help of its tail and enormous hind legs it is able to escape by terrific bounds when pursued". With six columns and four rows, for a total of 24 animal blocks. The illustration of the dog is the German spitz; other animals include the antelope, camel, bison, duck, elephant, flamingo, goat, hippo, ibis, jaguar, lion, monkey, newt, ostrich, porcupine, quail, rhino, tiger, underwing moth, vulture, wolf and zebra. In the original box, with chromolithographic illustration of lions in front of a cave, and 'Germany' stamped at the lower right corner. Edges of box slightly rubbed, a few splits.
