New York: H. M. Caldwell, 1906. Hardcover. Cleverly illustrated children's book, in which a silhouette appears to be one thing, and then is revealed as something completely different on the following page. With a kangaroo silhouette which turns out to be a captain's dog, sitting watch on the pier!

Each illustration with two lines of verse printed below. Other pairs of images cleverly illustrated include: a stern Russian soldier revealed to be Santa Claus; a donkey revealed to be Mollie bandaged for mumps; a horse revealed to be a little girl perched on a fence; a reindeer revealed to be cousin Mary sitting near cactus plants. Other animals are a hippo, lion, pig, rabbit, hungry goat, cat, camel, bear, giraffe, hen, butterfly, and turkey.

Sml 8vo, not paginated, 76 leaves. Plaid cloth covers with green & red illustrated label laid down at front and rear boards. No title at spine (a bit sunned). A little light, generalalized marking, but pleasant. Very good condition. Item #19383
