Large real photograph portrait of British actress Adelaide Neilson as Juliet.

Folio size cabinet card portrait of the famed British actress Adelaide Neilson (1848 - 1880) dressed for the role of Juliet, in which she made her acclaimed American debut at Booth's Theatre, New York City on November 18, 1872. Portrait taken by the well known celebrity photographer Jose Maria Mora, a wealthy refugee from Cuba. Neilson toured the US in the 1870s, playing Shakespeare roles such as Juliet, Rosalind, Viola, Beatrice, Imogen and Isabella; she also played Amy Robsart, Julia, Lady Teazle and Pauline. Almost full length portrait, with Neilson dressed in simple white gown. She divorced in 1877 and died at the age of 32 in a riding accident in Paris. Photography studio, Mora New York, printed in gilt at bottom. With "Adelaide Neilson famous Juliet" written at bottom of photograph. Corners of card stock a bit rubbed, with hand written inscription below in early hand. Gilt beveled edges, 7 1/2 x 13" Very good condition. Item #19534
