Based on his traveling and journals between 1865 and 1867, the count traveled to Australia, the Dutch East Indies, Siam, China, Japan and California. The majority of the volume encompasses his travels in Australia, relating his arrival in Melbourne, travels in Victoria, Tasmania, Sydney and New South Wales, touching on the gold mines of Victoria, political and social impressions, the interior, sheep and the cannibals of Torres Straits. He relates stories of crocodile & rhinoceros hunts in Java. In Siam (Thailand) he witnessed strange ceremonies including the rites of incineration of the king. He also visited Hong Kong and Macao before traveling to California, where he visits San Francisco, Yosemite and their mining districts.
