"Echo" Special. Monday, 14th September, 1914. THE WAR, German Forces cut Off. By British and French. ... Herbertshohe occupied. By Australian Squadron.

Liverpool? 1914. News sheet advertising the "Echo" for 14th September 1914, listing WWI events including the Australian occupation of the German Solomon Islands, with the following text, "The Australian Squadron occupied Herbertshohe, the seat of Government of the Bismarck Archipelago and the German Solomon Islands". Possibly from 'The Liverpool Echo', which covered the war extensively. On September 11, 1914, the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force landed at Rabaul and Herbertshohe in German New Guinea, and on the 17th the official surrender was signed. By October the whole area was placed under Australian administration; German New Guinea became an Australian mandate under the League of Nations as the territory of New Guinea by the end of the war. Small perforation at upper left, not affecting text. 5 3/4 x 11'. Very good condition. Item #19912
