Proposed to be erected for the Arch-Bishop of Sydney. Hemming's Patent Improved Portable Houses. Sole Manufactory, Clift House, Bedminster, Bristol.

London: Day & Son Lithographers, Ca. 1853. Chromolithographic print of a charming pre-fabricated corrugated iron house by the builder of portable houses, Samuel Hemming (1799 - 1876) of Clift House, Bristol. Hemming was said to have established his portable house manufactory after building one for a son going out to Australia. Hemming's buildings were timber framed and clad in corrugated iron; he supplied Australia specifically, and each week made an entire village's worth of buildings which were disassembled and packed up for the trip to Australia. He made at least two iron pre-fab churches for the Diocese of Melbourne.
The print showing a charming single story double gabled residence with porch awning across the front, women and a seated artist sketching. Short closed tear bottom edge; slight loss to upper left corner only. From William Simpson's 'Hemming's Patent Improved Portable Houses' (OCLC Number: 225522259). This print, Rex Nan Kivell Collection ; NK480. Very good condition. Item #20141
