Set of 50 Polychrome Color Cards of the Yellowstone National Park.

ca. 1920. Complete set in its original box, with all 50 printed color postcards, with text on front lid, ". Put Up Especially for Yellowstone Park Store, George Whittaker, Proprietor, Yellowstone Park, Wyoming".

George Whittaker was involved with Yellowstone over a long period, having been stationed as a soldier at Fort Yellowstone in 1891, having worked as a civilian scout from 1897 to 1909 and as an agent for the Yellowstone Transportation Company. In 1913 Whittaker bought the store and operated it for 20 years, adding a gas station in 1915.

The postcards numbered at the lower left, captioned, and with descriptive text at verso. Most by HHT Co; others with copyright H. H. Tammen Co. stamped on front upper edge.
Tammen specialized in national park, rodeo and western items. Harry Heye Tammen established the firm of H. H. Tammen & Co. in 1881 in Denver, Colorado. The company focused on creating souvenir mineralogical curiosities, but also sold photography, silver souvenir spoons, and similar items. In 1895, Tammen became editor of the Denver Post.; his company remained in business until 1953.

Box lid slightly dusty, splits at some corner seams, but otherwise very sturdy. The postcards in immaculate condition. All postcards are unused, with split backs. Each of the cards is captioned and numbered at the lower left corner. Box measures 6 x 4" Very good condition. Item #20262
