The cross country journey of a Garrison, New York resident who in 1867, built a country estate designed by Alexander Jackson Davis, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Hurst Pierrepont Estate. Pierrepont (1817 – 1892) an attorney, was a personal advisor to Abraham Lincoln; he also conducted the government's case against John Surratt, indicted as accomplice in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Pierrepont later worked in New York to bring about the downfall of Boss Tweed's Tammany Hall.

The author and his father traveled cross country in 1883, stopping at many places, including "the Mormon City". With four folding maps by Leonard Forbes Beckwith: map of transcontinental railroads; railroad route to Yosemite Valley and the Big Trees; map of Pacific Northwest and Alaska; and map of Yellowstone.

This is the true first edition; the second printing had an additional 10pp (OCLC: 457754573). 8vo, 329pp. With the bookplate of Prescott Evarts inside front board. Red and silver gilt decorative cloth covers, with illustration of seal on ice at front board, title in gold gilt at spine. OCLC: 503960564. Very good condition. Item #20641
