He served in Indochina and Madagascar, was the first French Resident General in Morocco, and from 1921 was a Marshal of France. He was known as the "Maker of Morocco" and "the French empire builder".

This is a volume of his letters on the conditions that confronted him. 4to, ix, 644pp, 5 folding maps in color. other maps printed in text. Bound in the original paper wrappers, title on cover and spine. Uncut and unopened. A very nice copy with general dusting on the covers and a little chip on the upper spine. Very good condition.
