Melbourne: John Ferres, Government Printer, 1874. First printing. Paperback. Scarce stand-alone "Report of Progress of the Geological Survey of Victoria, Part II." Includes descriptions of the various gold mining localities, including Ballarat, Cape Otway, Ararat, Stawell, Gippsland, and Lake Cooper. Includes other minerals (lead and quartz), and geology of different regions. With 6 folding sketch maps and plans, including locations near Beechworth, Stawell, Freestone Creek, Tallarook, and Kilmore; and many in text illustrations and diagrams.

In 1860 Smyth (1830 - 1899) became secretary for the Department of Mines at the height of the Australian gold rushes. He also published 'The Prospector's Handbook' (1863), 'The Gold Fields and Mineral Districts of Victoria' and numerous mining pamphlets. Smyth worked for years on an important volume concerning aborigines, published in 1878, 'The Aborigines of Victoria: with Notes Relating to the Habits of the Natives of other Parts of Australia and Tasmania'.

Small folio, 141pp. Paper wrappers, title in black at front wrapper, no title at spine. Verso lists maps, reports, and papers published by the mining department of Victoria.
