Port of Auckland, New Zealand. Sailing Directions, compiled by Thomas Kerr, Esq., Master of Her Majesty's Surveying Vessel Pandora.

Auckland: Williamson & Wilson, 1852. First printing. Although the publication of this 4 page, locally printed, sailing directions for Auckland was advertised in the "New Zealander", it does not appear that the actual pamphlet is held by the National Library of New Zealand. See " The New Zealander ", Volume 8, Issue 687, 13 November 1852, Page 2 (See http://natlib.govt.nz/records/2981616 for newspaper reference.)

Shortly after the Treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840, Capt. William Hobson, (Lieut. Governor of the new British colony), selected Auckland as the first post-treaty capital specifically because of its potential as a port. Auckland was chosen in order to satisfy the urgent need to establish a suitable capital and trading center. In spite of unsatisfactory wharf facilities located on large tidal mud flats, it quickly expanded into a center for maritime trade. In 1848 the detailed survey (the "Great Survey") of the New Zealand coast began with the HMS Acheron, a steam paddle sloop under Captain Stokes, and the HMS Pandora under Captain Drury. It continued until 1856 when Britain recalled the ships.

Much specific and useful information is included in the circular making Auckland a much safer harbor: "easiness of approach", tides, making land, descriptions of islands and island groups, channels, rocks, buoy locations, and capes. 8vo, 9 x 11 1/2", 4pp, folded. Elaborately printed with at least 8 different type fonts and wide margins. A few short splits at original folds, not affecting text. Obviously used with contemporary folds and period ink written title on one of the folds along with the words "beads" and "shot ", both with what looks like a price. There are also some penciled numbers that seem to be used for an addition. Not located in Trove or OCLC. Good + overall. Item #20929

Price: $750.00
