Planning just a visit to the far East, Ball ended up living in China for several years. In this book, he describes Hong Kong, Canton, Manilla, Formosa, Shanghai, Treaty of the English and Chinese, Dr. Lockhart's Hospital, missionary schools, 4th of July in China, Ningpo, Teen Tung monastery, Chinese opium smoking, Tea gardens, Amoy, Fou Chow, escape of missionaries from pirates, Macao, and the Yangtze River.
