Debate on Pensioning Jeff. Davis. Condensed from the Proceedings of the U. S. Senate, March 3, 1879.

Washington DC: 1879. Paperback. "Provided further, That no pension shall ever be paid under this act to Jefferson Davis, the late president of the so-called confederacy" (p1); this proviso was added to a bill (granting pensions to veterans of the War of 1812 be applied also to veterans of the Mexican War) by Senator Hoar of Massachusetts. Sectional feelings once again ran high when the military pension for Jefferson Davis was proposed, with Republicans and Democrats split along party lines.
