Item #22097 Hudson River School Charcoal on Sand Paper Painting.

Hudson River School Charcoal on Sand Paper Painting.

Ca. 1840. Fanciful Hudson River school view of the Hudson Highlands, with mountains in the distance, sailing ships on the river, and a long boat approaching shore in the foreground. Made in a muted range of gentle grays and whites, with a few horizontal clouds creating a serene image. A popular technique of the 1840s and 1850s in which the artist created a drawing with charcoal or pastels, highlighting the finished product with marble dust, giving the painting a slightly glittery sheen. Sometimes called "sandpaper painting". 12 x 8 3/4" Very good condition. Item #22097
