1917/1919. Archive of 22 real b&w photographs of California troops at Camp Fremont, near Palo Alto, which was established in W.W.I. The troops here were mostly medical students from the University of California and physicians from the district, organized in San Francisco to serve at Base Hospital 47 in France. The men began training at Fremont, then transferred to Camp Greenleaf, Georgia. Camp Greenleaf was a medical officer training camp created at Chickamauga National Battlefield Park as part of Fort Oglethorpe. Authorized in May 1917, it prepared medical officers for work with motor field units, base hospitals, and evacuation hospitals.

The photographs show the troops in training, many numbered on the front to correspond to named individuals on the verso, in February & March of 1918. These images include troops relaxing in front of tents at Fremont; Breaking Camp at Fremont; standing in mess line; Fremont, Breaking Camp on move to Fort Oglethorpe, Ga.; in Parade Rest at Retreat, Camp Greenleaf; attention at Camp Greenleaf, and a real picture postcard numbered at the front, with names on the verso, of Camp Greenleaf Ga., May 5, 1918. Photographs mostly 5 3/4 x 3 1/2".

Individuals named in the photos of Camp Fremont include: Capt. J. W. Calhoun, Sgt. 1st Cl. M. Johnson, Sgt. R. H. Rose, Sgt. H. Southscott; Sgt. R. H. Rose standing in front of a tent; Colonel C. J. Manly, Capt. Sidebotham, Sgt. Breckenfeld; and Capt. J. W. Calhoun, Hosp. Sgt. E. A. Ebert, Sgt. 1st Cl. M. Johnson, Sgt. H. I. Blackman, Sgt. R. H. Rose; Sgt. H. Southscott, Sgt. M. L. Boyd.

The collection also includes 2 additional real photographs of German troops in review, and captioned in pencil, "Kaiser Reviewing Shock Troops, Gen [Hubein?]" and "Kaiser with two body guards". 7 x 5".

The two ephemeral pieces are from Base Hospital 47 in France. US AEF Base Hospital 47 in Beaune, France opened in the fall of 1918 and operated til January of 1919.
The first item is a Vaudeville show program, titled "Under Fire, Somewhere in France perpetrated by Base Hospital 47, Municipal Theatre, Every Seat a portable bomb Shelter", dated Sat Sept. 14, 1918. List of acts includes the Jazz Orchestra, Trio from the Front; Victrola Detwiler; Polly Hill; "Stew Haven" (from Hawaii); A Mellow Drama, "The Courier's Fate"; Kubelik Winfree; Lance Corporal Gil Squires; and More Jazz from the Orchestra. 5 1/4 x 8 1/2", folded, printed on pink paper.

The second Base Hospital 47 item is a printed Thanksgiving Dinner Menu, November 28, 1918, Beaune France. The menu is printed in an elegant italic font, in French (it does include turkey), and is tipped on to textured thick card stock. 4 1/2 x 7".

The last item is a roneographed letter from Headquarters, 4th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, from John J. Pershing to Major General Hersey, Commander 4th Division, commending Hersey and his troops following an inspection, and saluting their conduct as part of the 3rd Army division in Germany. With a headquarters Official Stamp. 8 1/2 x 14", original folds.

A unique W.W.I collection which captures UCLA medical students from training for war duty, at Camp Fremont to Greenleaf, and on to Base Hospital 47 in France. Very good condition. Item #22560
