Curtis L. Van Dusen was born in Dutchess county, New York in 1826. In the 1850s he farmed and sold agricultural implements in Palmyra. In 1865 he settled in Macedon where, in connection with farming, he started a nursery business. He soon moved to Geneva and bought a half interest in a nursery business which was named Herendeen & Van Dusen. The crash of 1873 almost destroyed the business, but by 1881, two years before his death, Van Dusen had paid off all his debts. In 1883, the business continued under his son's management as the C. L. Van Dusen Nursery Company.
