Postcards from a W.W.I Prisoner of War.
1915-1918. A series of 8 post cards sent from Doberitz prison camp in Germany from Lance Corporal F. Jessop, Lincolnshire Regt, No. 2 Company, to Miss N.B. Edwards of London. The cards are all passed by the German censor and postmarked. The text is comprised of the soldier's New Year's 1915, two of Easter 1916, Christmas 1916 (like a playing card), Easter 1917, Christmas 1917, Easter 1918. Termed "Kriegsgefangenensendung", these postcards were the only allowable mail from prisoners of war to relatives or sweethearts at home.
All but one of this set of 8 postcards are Easter and Christmas greetings from two men of the same last name, possibly brothers during their stay as POW's in Doberitz, Germany: Frank and Garnet Jessop to Miss N. B. Edwards and Miss M. Edwards in Streatham Hill or Camberwell, London from December 1915 to July 1918. Frank Jessop was in the 1st Lincolnshire Regiment; D. 'Garnet' Jessop in the 80th Battery, R.F.A., No. 3 Company.
One of the amusing postcards by Cecil Tooke illustrates 2 men sleeping and dreaming, "God Bless Our Camp" "Hush! Don't make a noise- we're dreaming about the exchange."
5 b&w and 3 color postcards with amusing military illustrations, verso split back, message written in pencil with only name and address, no personal message. Each stamped with German 'Gepruft' (approval from mail censors), and official prison camp hand stamp. 8 postcards, 3.5 x 5.5", some corners bumped, one corner lacking but remarkably clean.
