Ca. 1865. An albumen photograph of a Fijian school with young children seated on the ground in front of traditional thatched roof building. Their native teacher, dressed in western garb, a white shirt and long trousers, is sitting on a fallen palm tree in the foreground. At the extreme left the wooden-spoked wheels of a small carriage are visible.
3 3/4 x 2 1/2". Partially obscured photographer's imprint on verso, possibly "---ert Coumbe". Slight damage to top left corner repaired on verso with archival tape, not affecting the part of the image showing people. Good + overall. Item #23401
