TLS from Julia Child to friends discussing disappointing Californian wine they had shared together, along with letters to and from the owner of The Monterey Vineyard.

June 20, 1975. Chatty letter to their friends "John and Chickie", discussing disappointing Californian wine that they had together from the Monterey Vineyard. It includes photocopies of Mrs. Child's letter to Gerald Asher, president of the Monterey Bay Company, based in San Francisco dated May 30, 1975, and his reply to her June 12th. The letters discuss at length the qualities of the wine. Mrs. Child comments "I hate to write this to you! But what use would it be were I merely noncommittal? Particularly since both Paul and I are so much interested in the California Vintners' struggle to produce good wines. I am afraid this bit of paper will bring forth Groucho Marx's reputed response: "I was delighted to receive your letter - until I read it." Mr. Asher's letter discusses the making of Gamay-Beaujolais, Riesling and Sylvaner; botrytis spreading through their vineyard; the wines being picked out as outstanding by the Circle of Wine Writers in London and the wine trade in Copenhagen. "The Gruner Sylvaner was selected two weeks ago by the wine committee of The Bohemian Club in San Francisco, probably the most severe tasting panel in the world, to be the Club white wine."

Addressed to Prof. and Mrs. John E. Smith of Hamden Conn. Professor John Edward Smith was a professor at Vassar, Bard and Yale, which explains Child's postscript "P.S. Hope all is well at the Yale Summer School!"

Also with a handwritten note from Julia referencing the Smith's having to rise early in the AM, with a red heart and arrow drawn in the corner, and the original envelope, addressed by Mrs. Child. Also with a newspaper clipping about Groucho Marx. And a small paper torn from a lined notebook with the Child's address in Cambridge, written in Mrs. Child's hand. Item #23468
