Color lithograph certificate of donation to Union Volunteer Refreshment Saloon and Hospital.

Philadelphia: 1862. Chromolithographic illustrated Civil War certificate recording a donation of $200 "by the young ladies of Hancock Gram. School", dated Nov 1st, 1862.

The lithograph by James Fuller Queen, one of the leading American lithographers during the golden age of lithography. Queen worked in the period when multiple stone color prints and chromolithography with oil was being developed. He was one of the most respected and multitalented lithographers of the Civil War period.

A charming record of a contribution made to this volunteer relief agency that provided meals, hospital care and sleeping accommodations to freedmen, soldiers, and refugees. It assisted more than 800,000 men and served over one million meals before closing on December 1, 1865.

The decorated border shows soldiers marching past saloon and hospital (at the top) and an amputee in hospital bed with children at the bedside at the lower left, the scene framed with a draped American flag.
