The Arcade Under-Ground Railway. Lithograph.
New York: 1868. Wonderful lithograph view of the first proposed New York City subway, titled "under Broadway, view near Wall St."
Subway cars are visible on the tracks, as women and men descend elegant curved staircases from the street down to the platforms. Horse drawn carriages and pedestrians travel the street above, which shows Hatch & Co Lithographers on one corner, and the Bank of the Republic on the other. Elevated railways were in use in the city in 1870, but a bona fide subway was not available until 1904.
The subway depicted here was part of a proposal made by Egbert Viele (1825 - 1902), State Engineer of New Jersey who later surveyed the land which was to become Central Park. Viele was appointed engineer in chief of Central Park in 1856.
9 x 6" on paper 10 1/4 x 6 3/4". Slightly marked at right margin; a few small perforations at the bottom edge of the print. Very good condition. Item #23625
