Cunard RMS Aurania ... Programme of Concert.

Cunard RMS Aurania ... Programme of Concert.

1887. Maritime fund raiser program inviting passengers on the Aurania to a concert on June 10, 1887 to benefit both British and American orphanages. The Chair for the benefit is the Right Rev. the Bishop of Tennessee. Not found in OCLC.

The program text includes the lyrics to "My Country, 'Tis of Thee", here titled "America"; it was used as the de facto national anthem before the adoption of "The Star Spangled Banner".

The British orphanage is the Liverpool Seamen's Orphanage, while the American is the Home for Destitute Children of Seamen, Staten Island, NY. The Staten Island home was founded in New York in 1847; in 1852 it leased land at Sailors Snug Harbor where a new building was constructed to accommodate 100 children who came mostly from tenements in the city of New York. The home's name was changed in 1998 to the Seamen’s Society for Children and Families, and it remains in service today.
