Boston: Columbian Centinel, 1814. Ephemera. The main article of the newspaper on page 1 is '"Official Account of the loss of the Frigate Essex" Copy of a letter from Captain Porter, to the Secretary of the Navy" dated Washington City, July 13, 1814 and Essex Junior, July 3d, 1814, at Sea'. Letters on page 2 also include those from Captain James Hillyer, of the HMS Phoebe. The War of 1812 occupies the majority of the paper. The Essex story inspired Herman Melville's Moby Dick.

4 pages, 14 3/4 x 20", 108 column inches, a bit dusty, some small closed tears in the lower left margin, original folds. Good + overall. Item #23731
