Monument to Henry Clay, America's Illustrious Statesman, Erected by the Citizens of Schuylkill Co., at Pottsville, Penn. Lithograph.

Philadelphia: Wagner & McGuigan's Lith. and Steam Press, Ca. 1840. Lithograph of the imposing monument to the elder statesman Henry Clay, who put together the compromises of 1820 and 1850, which temporarily saved America from splitting apart over slavery. Clay was very popular in this particular county of Pennsylvania because he supported a high tariff on imported British iron, protecting the coal industry of Pottsville.

The towering monument consists of a 15 foot figure of Henry Clay on a large column, set on a plinth in a park. The statue of Clay was made by Philadelphia sculptor H. Waschi and cast by Robert Wood.

17 x 21 1/2, on Japan paper 22 1/2 x 28 1/2". Crack at top center, extending into the print about 3 inches, some chipping at upper left edge not affecting printed area, some fox spotting to the lower portion at the title. Good + overall. Item #24461
