London: Richard Bentley & Son, 1876. Hardcover. An account by Frederick Edward Maning [1812 - 1883] who lived with Ngapuhi Maori for many years, later becoming a judge of the Native Land Court using his extensive knowledge of Maori language, customs and traditions.

[WITH] a manuscript letter by R. Seymour Fannin who writes, "It may interest readers of this account... that at the time of the massacre mentioned by Lord Pembroke at Poverty Bay, I was a boy of a little over 3 years old and can remember walking by my mother's side... to the barracks... for protection as Te Kooti was on his way from the Poverty Bay massacre to annhilate all the white people..."

Maning was an early settler in New Zealand where he gained favor with the Maori and later translated at meetings regarding the Treaty of Waitangi. According to Wikipedia, this volume is in part a lament for the lost freedom enjoyed before European rule.
