Item #24727 "On to Victory. Over the Top". WWI Souvenir Pillow Cover.

"On to Victory. Over the Top". WWI Souvenir Pillow Cover.

Ca. 1919. Large printed color propaganda piece with printed image of American troops "Going over the top", springing out of a fox hole and charging with rifles at the ready. Likely a recruitment piece for the military.

In WWI the phrase was coined by the British to describe the infantry emerging from the safety of the trenches to attack the enemy across open ground.

Printed with a large American eagle and American flag at the upper left, and the large slogan "On to Victory" printed on the diagonal, in dark blue, an elaborate type font with mauve drop shadow.

The pillow cover trimmed with blue machine made lace and long fringe. Remarkably bright and clean. 17 x 18" with 3" fringe. Very good + condition. Item #24727
