Sexual Physiology of Woman, and her Diseases or, Woman, Treated of Physiologically, Pathologically, and Esthetically with eight elegant illustrative pictures of female beauty.

Boston: Peabody Medical Institute, 1869. Hardcover. A nineteenth century dirty book, masquerading as a legitimate medical work, with 7 color lithographic plates of nude women, which were eliminated in later editions to avoid obscenity charges. Although the author was a doctor in the army, he was not as he claims on the title page, the " late Surgeon of the U. S. A".

Contents include puberty, menstruation, maternity, embryology, abortion, beauty, magdalenism (prostitution), venereal plague, and sexual love. The book concludes with the solicitous concern of Hayes, who states that he has procured a cure from an Indian medicine man and dubbed it "Dr. Hayes' Yosemite Panacea", priced $15 to $30; all letters must contain a minimum of $5. Pages 339-345 detail Hayes' prescriptions for various ills.
