A very scarce Polar item, a compilation of the first issues of The Polar Times bound together, starting with Vol. 1, No. 1 from June 1935 to Vol. 1, No. 10 March 1940. Each issue with original wrappers. Each issue specially printed for the binding, printed on one side on sturdy paper. Includes the Polar Times Index 1935 to 1940 [11] pp, and American Polar Society Membership roster as of March 1940, indicating members who have been in the Polar regions.
Editor Howard had negotiated agreements with the New York Times and North American Newspaper Alliance to receive and re-print current polar articles, and this became 'The Polar Times'. Included is Ivar Hamre's report "The Japanese South Polar Expedition of 1911-1912, a little known episode in Antarctic Exploration" (June 1936); and Lincoln Ellsworth's trans-Antarctic flight and expedition (Jan. 1936); also many maps and illustrations, 11 pp index and 3pp list of members of the American Polar Society, includes the numbers of international members, bringing the total to 414. The American Polar Society began in November 1934 and still exists today.
4to, original blue cloth, 200pp, with silver title on spine, and Vol I printed under the dates; date and volume numbers on each issue, limitation not indicated however this is #28, signed by the editor, printed on one side only. Internally clean and crisp. OCLC: 1762537 as a series. Scarce, we have not been able to locate any copies ever coming onto the market. Very good condition. Item #25122
