Das Plakat, Marz 1917. Poster Magazine.

Berlin: Verlag Das Plakat, 1917. Wraps. Single issue, a scarce war issue of the German poster design magazine, published only from 1910 to 1921, with stunning chromolithograph illustrations by Hohlwein and Gipkens.

Ludwig Hohlwein's work includes a powerful image of a gray German battleship superimposed against a bright pink sky, for a benefit "Marine Konzert" to be held on board ship. Additional Hohlwein work is a poster for donations in support of German war prisoners depicting a prisoner in profile against prison bars; and an advertisement for Marco Polo Tee depicting a military officer in profile carrying tea tray. Julius Gipkens work includes Eiko Film advertisements featuring the German actress Hedda Vernon.

Hohlwein and Gipkens were important artists of the "plakatstil" (poster style) movement, which emphasized simplified shapes, bold typography and a powerful use of color.
Hans Sachs (1881-1974) , Berlin dentist and later poster art afficionado & publisher founded the Association of Poster Friends in 1905 and published the journal "Das Plakat" from 1910-1921.
