Biographies of important figures, including Captain James Cook and Washington Irving, complete with the copper engraved frontispiece portrait of Dewitt Clinton, and 12 other engraved portraits. The Captain Cook biography notes the Royal Society's awarding of the Copley gold medal to Cook, and the June 8, 1779 notification of Cook's death.

Engraved portraits include Talma, Mademoiselle Mars, Wellington, Napoleon Bonaparte, George IV, Caroline, Sir Walter Scott, Madame de Stael, Rev. Edward Irving, Edmund Kean, Henry Broughman, and Washington Irving.

18mo, frontispiece, 254pp. In the original yellow printed paper covered boards, the paper spine has the title and middle third but lacks the top & bottom sections, covers rubbed, front hinge loose but holding. Blank corner missing from Clinton portrait not affecting the image, some scattered fox spotting. OCLC: 1064368286 records only one copy, at the British Library. Good condition. Item #25467
