Item #25477 Coat of Arms of Australia, Duke's Cigarettes trade card.

Coat of Arms of Australia, Duke's Cigarettes trade card.

Durham NC: Ca. 1900. A fanciful version of the Australian coat of arms, as well as a fanciful Australian flag, a kangaroo, and a central portrait of the Prince of Wales (or, as the president tweeted, "Whales"), on an American cigarette chromolithographed trade card.

The card is divided in thirds, with the left section showing a coat of arms (not Australia's, but with elements of the NSW arms), the middle section the portrait of the Prince of Wales, and the right a flag (not Australia's, a flag in yellow & white quarter, with red and blue bars) above a standing kangaroo (at least they got this right). There was great interest in the flag in this time period, and this was one variation on the national flag. Color lithograph, 4 5/8 x 3". Blank on verso. Not found on Trove. Very good + condition.
