Plate 1 slightly dusty, otherwise bright and clean. These are detailed plates of Madagascar plant species currently facing a wave of extinction due to habitat degradation and deforestation throughout the island. Madagascar has over 11,000 endemic plant species, including seven species of baobab tree.

The botanical section of this 39 volume work on Madagascar is by Henri Baillon. Henri Ernest Baillon (1827 - 1895) was a French botanist and physician. Baillon was one of only 8 botanists to publish research on the Croton (Euphorbiaceae) species, of which one third of the known species grow in Madagascar.
