Australia: Australasian Sketcher, 1876. An engraving published in the newspaper on January 22, 1876, after the fourth of Ernest Giles' expeditions into Western Australia. Giles [1835 -- 1897] was an explorer who led 5 major expeditions into Southern and Western Australia. The expedition began in May 1875 and lasted until November starting from Beltana and ending in Guildford W.A.
The image is of the party: Giles, W.H. Tietkens, Saleh (Afghan Camel driver), Alex Ross, Jess Young (Naturalist) and Peter Nicholls, and Tommy the Aboriginal Native who found water after 17 days without. 11 by 8 3/4", with later hand color.
