London: Thornton, December 1, 1808. Sweeping view of tea gathering in China, a large impressive aquatint, after the Chinese artist Sango-so. The commanding scene shows a trio of tea gatherers in the foreground at work in a large tea plantation, two additional tea gatherers in the middle ground near an elegant pavilion, and mountains in the distance.
From Thornton's 'The Philosophy of Botany, Being Botanical and Philosophical Extracts'. 21 1/2 x 17 1/4" on paper with wide margins. Faint toning along the center crease, slight fox spotting along the top edge, outside the image. Very good overall. Item #26104
