Leprosy in Hong Kong.
Hong Kong: Kelly & Walsh Ltd., 1890. First edition. Hardcover book. A hard bound monograph paper describing the disease in Hong Kong, with case studies and illustrations. James Cantlie, M.A. M.B., F.R.C.S. [1851 - 1926] was a Scottish physician, pioneer of first aid, and co-founder of the Hong Kong College of Medicine for Chinese (at the Alice Memorial Hospital, from which Sun Yat Sen was one of the first graduates).
Sun was in exile in London in 1896, raising money for his revolutionary party and to support uprisings in China. While the events leading up to it are unclear, Sun Yat-sen was detained at the Chinese Legation in London, where the Chinese secret service planned to smuggle him back to China to execute him for his revolutionary actions. He was released after 12 days by the efforts of Dr. James Cantlie & others. Cantlie maintained a lifelong friendship with Sun and later wrote an early biography of him.
Cantlie was also the co-founder of both the London School of Tropical Medicine and the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. Ownership stamp of George Brush, a US Naval captain from Long Island, who would personally have purchased this copy in China. Small 8vo, 99pp. Publishers' pink papered covered boards, cloth spine. Marginal insect damage only to the cover paper with no loss to boards or text; endpapers browned with slight damp and paper rippling, but internally very bright and clean.
