Downing lived in Newburgh on the Hudson River, and many of his designs were done with the Hudson River area in mind. Downing died in the fire of the Hudson riverboat The Henry Clay in 1852 at the early age of 36, even then recognized as the foremost landscape designer of America. An ex-library copy in the publisher's blue embossed cloth covers, rebacked with the original spine laid down. 8vo, 532pp, plates and illustrations in text. Top corner of title page missing, sml. marginal watermark on foredge. Only library mark is a label on inside front board. Internally a very clean copy of an important work. Very good condition.
