Item #27507 Vue de la Rade de Sydney et du Fort Macquarie, Nlle Hollande pendant le sejour de la Venus en 1838. NSW Sydney, Print, Romuald Georges after Charles Rodius Menard, Du Petit-Thouars.

Vue de la Rade de Sydney et du Fort Macquarie, Nlle Hollande pendant le sejour de la Venus en 1838.

Paris: Gide, 1841. First printing. Print. A wonderful lithographic view looking over Sydney Harbor from Bennelong Point. Printed for the official account of the French voyage by Abel du Petit-Thouars, "Voyage Autour du Monde sur La Venus 1836-1839", one of the rarest French voyages including Australia.

R.G. Menard was the artist on board the Frigate Venus and spent November and December 1838 at Sydney and his name appears in the image as the artist. However, an article written by Kenneth Binns published in the Royal Australian Historical Society Journal in 1920 points out that Charles Rodius was the original artist of this view, published in London in 1834. Menard only replacing the aboriginals in Rodius' image with French sailors in the 1838 version. This is Pl. no. 65 from "Voyage autour du monde sur la fregate Venus, Atlas pittoresque, Abel du Petit-Thouars.
