Australian Photographs and Correspondance from 1930.
Dennison Manufacturing, 1930. A collection of Australian photographs and correspondance that explains the photos to the home office of the Dennison Manufacturing company of Framingham, MA. In what seems to be a fairly useless effort, the head office of Dennison "...are building up some fine exhibits of Dennison goods in foreign territories. Since the Australian display has been one of the smallest, your contributions are especially welcome. The ... photograph of a typical Australian "bush" scene, makes an effective background for the examples of tags and seals used in District 51. ... If you should run across any examples of unusual uses of Dennison goods in your territory, such as odd tags or crepe novelties, don't hesitate to send them along." However, the pencil notation "? why" next to one of the photograph descriptions suggests his selection of photos somewhat missed the collecting interest (tags and labels) of the Dennison company.
There are 7 commercial photographs stamped on verso, "Hall & Co., Commercial Photographers, 20 Hunter Street, Sydney". They illustrate the unique Australian method of transportation of goods such as wool - via camel or bullock teams for instance. 5 typescript carbon copies of accompanying correspondence to the Dennison History Room of Dennison Manufacturing in Framingham, Massachusetts.
The correspondence is between Walter B. Homewood to Miss Heath of the History Room. His letters describe the 7 photos: No. 95 Camel team humping wool across a river; No. 930 Head of cattle are counted by tens of thousands; No. 38 Bullock Teams; No. 85 Typical Australian scene (dead timber that has been ring-barked); No. 304 A small flock of sheep; No. 809 Dead cattle, in Western Queensland (?); No. 259 Two identities which are fast going into obliviion... the aboriginal and his wife. He continues, "These people are ... the most primitive human beings remaining on the earth and civilization has not helped to preserve them but to help them towards their end. ... Some are very docile, some very warlike and the warlike ones are more intelligent...."
