Paris: E. Andriveau-Goujon, 1870. Pacific ocean map, including the whole of Australia and United States, with 3 insets of Nuku Hiva, Tahiti, Antarctic discoveries including Mt. Erebus, titled "Terres Australes". The Queensland southern border is set correctly, northern border ends at Maryborough. The western border meets at the South Australian border. South Australia's western border does not extend across to Western Australia. Everything north of the settled areas is entitled "Australie du Nord". An outline of the known Antarctic shore line "Terre Adelie" appears belows the border of the map, south of Tasmania in the margin.
The maps is color coded according to a key of European colonies: England = pink, France = blue, Holland = white, Spain = yellow, Portugal = orange.
38 x 26 1/4", period hand color map, linen-backed, folds to 8 3/4 x 6 1/2", with engraved title label laid down on exposed fold. Some slight surface rubbing, some light wear at edges, linen backing shows some damp stains that do not appear on the map itself. Bright, clean copy. Otherwise very good condition. Item #28036
