Sir Joseph Banks, BARt. (Proof) Portrait.
London: Molteno & Graves, 1834. First printing. Print. Mezzotint portrait of the young Banks with a sphere in his hand, wearing an infurred coat. The only institutional copies of this print we were able to locate were at the National Portrait Gallery UK and the Scottish National Portrait Gallery.
The image is small (45 1/2 x 4"), centered within the platemark measuring 9 x 6 1/2", on large paper 13 3/8 x 20" printed on a larger sheet 20 x 13.5 inches
On this print, Sir Joshua Reynolds, pinx.t (&) S. W. Reynolds, Sculpt. are both in italics.
The title is in all caps, beneath the word Proof (in italics). The printers line reads "
London, Published 1834, by Molteno & Graves, 20 Pall Mall." (also in italics)
Both the National Portrait Gallery UK & the Scotlish National Portrait Gallery have the published print, but not the proof. On their prints, the artist & engraver are in normal type, Sir Josh Reynolds. / S. W. Reynolds. The titles are engraved similarly on both prints. The line "IN THE POSSESSION OF THE LINNEUN (sic) SOCIETY." is under the title in all caps. The printers line reading "London, Published 1834 , by Hodgson, Boys & Graves, 6, Pall Mall, & Sold also by F. G. Moon, 20, Threadneedle Street." 8 7/8 in. x 6 3/8 in. (226 mm x 165 mm) plate size; 11 3/8 in. x 8 in. (293 mm x 205 mm) paper size. Very good condition. Item #28117
