France: c. 1910. A manuscript work c. 1910, a sweet tale illustrated with an economy of line that is remarkable. It is written in French and delicately illustrated with whimsical colored sketches. The book tells the story of a man who loved colors and strove to wear many at once. Going shopping, he purchases a yellow outfit, a green hat, a red cravat and purple shoes. To many, he was laughable; but to his wife, he was beloved.
Oblong 32mo, 5 x 7.5". 20pp, (last blank). Text & drawings in manuscript, hand colored. Gilt cardboard covers with the title in white manuscript. The date above is a conjecture based on the woman's clothing and the feeling that it was pre WWI.
The text: "Il etait une fois un homme, qui aimait beaucoup les couleurs. Un jour il entra dans un magasin pour acheter, un costume jaune, une cravate rouge, un chapeau vert et des souliers violets. Tres content il sortit pour faire une promenade. "Comme il est drole!" disaient les passants. hah, hah! "Comme il est drole!" criaient les petits enfants: hah, hah, hah!. Il rentra chez lui. "Bonjour, Cheri, dit sa femme en ouvrant la porte. Quel beau costume! quelle belle cravate! Quel beau chapeau! Quels beau souliers violets! Et elle lui donna un baisier. Fin."
