1916. Photography. Nine original sepia photographs by Martin and Osa Johnson, the American photographers, explorers and documentary filmmakers who traveled and documented their trips across East and Central Africa, the South Pacific Islands and British North Borneo between 1916-1936. The Johnson's exotic travel and the photos and docufilms they made captured the imagination of many viewers. Their nature photography was the first of its kind seen by American audiences.
Nine photographs, in total, all of them with images of natives. Two are signed in pencil on verso, one signed 'Osa Johnson 1916' with 'Chief Nagasaki, Head Hunter, New Hebrides'; the second of Osa with 5 natives and Martin behind, signed, "New Hebrides South Seas Osa & Martin Johnson." Other photos include two natives examining the camera on a tripod with Martin; two native men in grass skirt & headdress; two of young pregnant women, with large ear plugs and a small belt; one older man (white beard) in front of a roofed hut with a very tall carved white statue of a person (spirit?); four natives sitting in front of a hut entrance, Martin with his back to us, taking a photo; three young men standing in front of a large hut, the roof especially captured, Martin to the right hands on hips, with large tropical trees. Housed in two archival mats 20 x 16" with cut outs and picture hinges for each snapshot. Snapshots 3 7/8 x 4 7/8". Images are clear and crisp. Very good condition. Item #28771
