Liberty - A Poem.

May 25, 1867. A manuscript poem entitled "Liberty" describing "...Liberty, the dearest child of Heaven" as the instrument to 'guard [God's] people and help the Land....'
Followed by a chronological account of fights for liberty: Israelites in Egypt, Greeks and Persians, Irish and Scots, England, American Revolutionary War and American Civil War.

Hinged with 2 silk ties, title in ink on cover with the author's initials. A pencil note on last page records, "220 lines, finished May 25, 1867" followed by an insertion, "...So North and South met in the contest dire, envolving (sic) millions in war's mad desire."

From the collection of Minette Gunther, noted Philipstown New York historian. With an envelope addressed to Mr. W. Clark and the notation "keep this if you wish" written on front. Elaborate embossed initials on verso.

5 x 8", 21pp written on one side only, cover dusty, internally clean with some edits in pencil. Overall very good condition. Item #29126
