New Zealand prints from Parkinson's 'A Journal of a Voyage to the South Seas, in His Majesty's ship, The Endeavour'.
London: 1773. Print. Parkinson was the artist on Capt. James Cook's first voyage. As draughtsman to Sir Joseph Banks, he produced a prodigious number of striking drawings, both portraits & natural history and contains the first published use of the word kangaroo (as "kangooroo", p. 149). These images were to become some of the earliest images of the South Pacific seen by European observers. Sydney died in Batavia on the return voyage and his drawings and diary were claimed by his brother Stanfield, who produced the 1st edition.
