Irish-born O'Reilly was dedicated to the Fenian cause, and was transported to Western Australia in 1868 on the last convict ship sent to Australia. He succeeded in escaping to America on the whaling ship "Gazelle" two years later. In the US, he became a prominent literary figure, eventually as editor of the Boston Pilot. He was also instrumental in arranging another rescue ship to Western Australia, "The Bark Catalpa". Many of his poems contain references to Australia. He is considered the first poet associated with Western Australia. Spine faintly dulled o/w a very fine copy. 8vo, (ix) 179pp b&w photo frontispiece with facsimile signature.
