The Melbourne Advertiser.

Port Phillip: Peter Alcock, 1867. Paperback. Written for, and Published by Jno. P. Fawkner. Monday, January the 8th, 1838. No.2 price Sixpence Vol 1. A facsimile reproduction of a hand-written issue of the Melbourne Advertiser. Ferguson 2547 cites that the first printed issue, no. 10, issued March 5, 1838, was the first printed issue of the first newspaper published in Melbourne: it is also the first printing done in Melbourne. This issue a lithograph re-published by Peter Alcock and sold through various newsagents in the capitals. We estimate the publication date to be between 1867 and 1875, as Gordon & Gotch, Sydney & London are listed as agents on the bottom of page 4, but the Brisbane dealer is listed as a G. Slater. The Aus. Dict. of Biography lists Gordon & Gotch as having a Sydney & London office between 1867 & 1875, but no Brisbane office until 1875. This issue not recorded in Ferguson. Bit foxed, some marking and overall soil, several folds strengthened, still a pleasant copy. Very good. Item #5275
