This expedition from the telegraph line to the west coast won Warburton the distinction of being 1st to cross the continent. It was not easy going however & Warburton nearly died of starvation. He was so debilitated that much of the scientific portion of the work had to be written by others & his own journal edited by a member of the RGS.
