In 1836, Dupetit-Thouars was appointed to command this expedition to the Pacific to look after French commercial and political interests. He visited Hawaii, Kamchatka, Tahiti, California, Acapulco, Easter Island, the Cook Islands, Rarotonga, New Zealand, Australia and Mauritius. In California, he anchored at Monterey Bay, where supplies were scarce and even water was difficult to obtain after a long summer drought. His survey work continued down the coast down to Acapulco.
