Philadelphia: M. Carey, 1814. Steel engraving with period hand color, 9 1/2 x 13 1/2". This early map of Rhode Island shows rivers, lakes, early roads, and settlements with surprising accuracy and detail. The tip of Block Island is marked with the note "Part of Block Island upon which is the Town of New Shoreham." This map was issued in an atlas by Mathew Carey, one of the seminal figures in early American cartography, establishing the 1st American specialized publishing firm. This atlas was the best cartographic work of the period. Very slightly foxed with a faint line in the Atlantic Ocean, but very pleasing overall.
